Candy and the Kisses - the 81 (1964)

Candy and the Kisses sont un girls group américain de soul 60's. En 1964 elles sortent un 45tours pour la firme Cameo de Philadelphie (déjà évoqué ici pour ...Question Mark and the Mysterians) la face a est signé Kenny Gamble et Jerry Ross tandis que sur l'autre coté l'écriture est assurée par Leon Huff avec Cindy Scott, en un sens ce disque annonce le futur son de Philadelphie et 4 ans plus tard Huff et Gamble enfin réunis font leurs premiers top 5 avec les Soul Survivors puis Archie Bell and the Drells, la machine est en route. En dehors de l'aspect quasi-historique, the 81 est un excellent titre de soul uptempo, le genre de morceaux dont rafole la scène Northern où cette pépite est devenue un des grands classiques des clubs anglais.

The 81 was the sole 7inches of Candy and the Kisses published on legendary philly label Cameo (Question Mark and the Mysterians among others), it was written by Kenny Gamble and Jerry Ross, the other side was the work of Leon Huff and Cindy Scott. 4 years laters Gamble and Huff were reunited and achieved a first top 5 hit with the blue eyed soul band the Soul Survivors, but this tune is not only good for those historical reasons, it's a fine piece of uptempo soul, the kind of stuff the Nothern crowd loved and loves so enjoy and do the 81!
