Hop, voici le premier disque de 2011 sur le blog ! Ce morceau est issu d'un super split EP sorti chez Faux Discx, EP qui contient des morceaux de nos chouchous Fair Ohs et Cold Pumas (c'est le label de leur guitariste Dan Reeves) mais aussi de deux groupes canadiens : Friendo et donc Women. Je n'ai pas encore écouter leur album sorti l'année dernière sur Jagjaguwar, mais il paraît qu'il est bien, en tout cas, ce morceau Bullfight est une petite tuerie, pas franchement du tube instantanée et urgent mais une super chanson virant légèrement psyché, ce qui n'est pas pour me déplaire ! En tout cas, je conseille très fortement cet EP, car tout les morceaux sont excellents. L'année commence bien !
Meow, here is the first 2011 record on the blog ! This song is coming from an awesome split EP released by Dan Reeves owned Faux Discx, including tracks from our british favorite bands ATM Fair Ohs & Cold Pumas but also two canadian band Friendo and Women. I didn't listen (YET) their album on Jagjaguwar, but I heard a lot of good things about it. Anyway, this song is pretty amazing, kind of slow and psych-friendly, so defenitly not an urgent anthem to make you dance all night long, but a great song for sure. The rest of the EP is almost as good, each song is a good one. Goodbye 2010 Hello 2011 !
N'ayons pas peur des mots, il s'agît du meilleur album français de l'année tout simplement. Beat Mark est le projet « indie » de membres de Adam Kesher (Julien et Gaëtan respectivement chanteur et guitariste), Yussuf Jerusalem et This Is Pop, un bon pied à Bordeaux et un autre à Paris donc.
Je les avais découvert à l'occasion d'une interview dans Vice Mag où ils y dévoilaient leur passion pour Beat Happenning ou The Pastels, voilà le genre de marotte qui nous interpelle chez RPUT. Depuis cette interview, nous n'avions eu pas trop de nouvelles du groupe, en fait, ils ont sortis une cassette chez Burger Records (la classe !) et c'est la rencontre avec Didier de Final Taxi Records qui m'a dit qu'il sortait l'album du groupe, en vinyle 500 exemplaires avec download code, ils font les choses bien dans ce label !
Howls Of Joy s'inscrit donc dans un revival shoegaze, lorgnant légèrement vers le garage et avec une grosse connotation lo-fi, sous entendu tout ce qu'on aime. En gros, ça fait pas mal pensé aux Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (les voix de filles poussent à ce genre de comparaison), mais aussi un des rares groupes (enfin il y a d'autres, disons une dizaine en France) à avoir intégrer tout l'apport de la scène DIY américaine de ces dernières années, à savoir, une production un peu sale, pas mal d'effets de reverb et une écriture spontanée. Si vous êtes vous aussi amateur des labels Captured Tracks, Slumberland ou Woodsist, alors venez écouter notre meilleur représentant français.
Et parce que nous sommes sympas, nous mettons 2 morceaux : le tube évident du disque, l'hyper accrocheur Breeezing ! et la plus mélancolique People Of Your Kind, très indie, où l'harmonie fille – garçon fait merveille.
Let's use that words, this is just the best french rock album released this year. Beat Mark is the indie project of a kind of who's who of the french pop scene, it includes people from Adam Kesher (the core members Julien -singer- and Gaëtan -guitarist), Yussuf Jerusalem and This Is Pop, a foot in Bordeaux and an other in Paris. I discovered them thanks to an interview into french Vice mag last year. They were talking about their passion for indie bands like Beat Happening or The Pastels, which caught our attention here as you may guess. Since then, no really knews about them, before that moment earlier in the spring when I met Didier from Final Taxi Records that told me that he was about to release their album as a limited edition LP with Download Code (exactly what we like !).
Howls Of Joy is a kind of french answer to shoegaze revival bands like The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (hard to avoid that comparaison when you have female vocals) but also a real lo-fi and garage twist. This is one of the rare band (one of the even rarer to had released an album) to have understood all the good things from the recent DIY scene from the USA. If you're into labels like Captured Tracks, Slumberland or Woodsist you should listen our best band around in that kind.
And as I am a nice guy, I'm putting two songs we love, the first is the anthem, the immediate single of the album : Breeezing ! and the other, People Of Your Kind is more indie, the female / male vocals work perfectly here and it's one of my fav song on the album.
Nos copains de French Kissing que nous avions interviwé il y a quelques mois viennent de nous envoyer leur nouveau morceau Beach Ball. Lors de leur concert parisien, il s'agissait de leur dernière chanson et elle avait bien fait danser le public. Faut dire que cette tentative surf, très sixties beat au final, fait son petit effet sur les fesses. Ceux qui avait aimé leur tube Oh Suzanne, devrait apprécié, on retrouve cette même légèreté estivale qui nous avait tant convaincu.
En plus, le morceau figure sur la compilation cassette Endless Bummer sur le super label monté par (encore des copains) Matthew de Fair Ohs, Suplex Cassettes !
Our friends from French Kissing we interviewed few month ago, just sent us our last song : Beach Ball. When They played live in Paris, it was their last song on the setlist and the crowd dance like crazy kids. We must admit that this surf try, which actually sounds really sixties beat, is great for moving your hips. Those who liked their summer anthem Oh Suzanne should love this one too.
By the way, it was released by an other friend of Matthew from Fair Ohs on his super label Suplex Cassettes.
Spanish indie always been quite gorgeous. We all know some of their most famous labels such as Elefant or BCore and big acts that has been quite successful internationaly : Delorean, Tokyo Sex Destruction or El Guincho to name a few recent ones. Anyway, Margarita is an amazing band hailing from beautiful Madrid, I just love them. I used to compare them to Abe Vigoda (before they turned shitty synth wave as on the new album) and my friends Fair Ohs, but they're new album Explota El Cuerpo is ACE, even better than Parque y Magico. Turning their tropical urgent punk into a pop psych tropicalia (but still a bit punk), actually something between Abe Vigoda's Skeleton and perhaps Os Mutantes...

Can you tell us a bit the story of Margarita ? How do you formed ? Were you playing in other bands before ? Empezamos a tocar juntos hace como 7 años aproximadamente, nos juntamos porque nos conocíamos de antes, éramos amigos y tocábamos en otros grupos que se disolvieron a la vez, así que decidimos hacer Margarita. We begin to play together for like 7 years, we were knowing us before, we were friends and playing and other bands than splited at the same. Then we decided to form Margarita.
You're just release your second album Explota El Cuerpo, can you tell us a bit more about it ? Para este disco teníamos la idea de hacer canciones bonitas y sin perder nuestra esencia. Queríamos refinar el sonido y que fuese más cósmico, como si la música rebotara en el espacio. También queríamos probar nuevas maneras de tocar nuestros instrumentos y que eso diese algún tipo de resultado For this record, we had the idea of making the best songs without losing our soul. We wanted to sharpen the sound, to make it sounds more cosmic, as if the music was bouncing in the space. Moreover, we wanted to try new way of play our instruments and give them some kind of results.
What do you mean by "Exploit the body" ? “Explota el cuerpo” es una expresión que se nos ocurrió durante la grabación del disco medio en broma, pero que definía perfectamente lo que estábamos intentando expresar con él. Ese espíritu de creación y construcción que hay que tener incluso en situaciones adversas y duras. “Explota el cuerpo” es como la imagen que representa el estallido del estado puro de una persona. “Explota el cuerpo” is an expression that came like a joke during the recording of the record, but that was defining exactly what we would like to express with it. That spirit of creation and construction to keep in mind even in adverse and hard situations. "Explode the body" is like the picture of the outbreak of the pure state of a person.
How did you record that album ?
Nos fuimos a grabarlo a los Estudios Costa Brava en Sant Feliu de Gixols (Girona) y lo ha producido Santi García. Él aportó mucho al resultado del disco ya que supo sacar de nosotros cosas que estaban ahí y él hizo que fuesen mejores. Él es una persona con mucho tacto y supo cómo entendernos a la perfección.
We went to record it at Costa Brava Studios in Sant Feliu de Gixols, Girona with Santi Garcia as producer. He contributed very much to the result of the record, he helped us to bring out what were here and to make it better. He is a person with great tact and know how to understand each other perfectly.
What happened for you as a band after the release of Parque Magico ?
Justo después de Parque Mágico estuvimos un mes de gira por toda Europa y tocando por España el resto del tiempo. El disco tuvo muy buenas críticas por todos lados. Después de eso tuvimos que pensar en “Explota el cuerpo” como una evolución o reinvención del grupo.
Just after Parque Magico, we spent a month touring Europe and playing in Spain the rest of the time. The album received great reviews from all the sides. After this, we begin to think about « Explota El Cuerpo »as an evolution or reinvention of the band.
Are you living of your music or do you have some other jobs ?

In France, the indie music scene think that you have to sing in English if you want to succed. You're singing in Spanish, can you tell us about this choice ? What do the spanish public think about it ?
La gente que piensa en tener éxito se condena a pasarlo mal. Nosotros nunca hemos pensado en esos términos. Cantar en español fue una decisión natural justo después de sacar Parque Mágico. Y con el tiempo nos pareció una muy buena idea porque era una especie de necesidad dentro del grupo.No sé qué dirá la gente en España, pero seguro que hay diferentes opiniones.
People who think holding a success is doomed to pass it badly. We never think in those terms. Singing in Spanish was a natural decision after the release of Parque Magico. And, with time, it seems us to be a great idea because it was a kind of necessity inside of the band.
I don't know what people would say in Spain, they will surely be pretty different.
What do you think of general spanish culture into music ? You seems to always had a very solid musical scene but for most of them keeping very underground.
Aquí hay muy buenos grupos que deberían de ser conocidos en todo el mundo, hahaa. En serio. No sé por qué todo se mantiene tan underground. Me gustaría que a esos grupos les conociesen en todo el mundo y que disfrutaran de ellos.
Here are some great bands that really deserve to be known worldwide ahahah. Seriously, I don't know why everything is kept as underground. I wish that the world could know and enjoy these bands.
How is the rock scene in Madrid ? Can you recommand us some good bands ?
No sé si hay una escena o no, pero la verdad es que hay grupos alucinantes en Madrid. Antes había más grupos, ahora es todo un poco raro. Es difícil poder tocar aquí porque las salas te piden dinero por tocar y eso es negativo para los grupos. Ahora hay grupos que nos gustan mucho como Lidia Damunt (no sé si sigue viviendo en Madrid), Los Punsetes, Atomizador, Los Claveles, Charades, Grosgoroth y yo tengo un grupo nuevo que se llama Prisma en Llamas. Pero tampoco sé mucho de cómo está todo esto en Madrid.
I don't know if there is a scene or not, but the truth is that there are amazing band here in Madrid. It used to be more bands, but nowadays, they became kind of rare. It's really difficult to play music because here, the concert places are asking you some money for you to play, which is very negative for bands.
Nowadays, there are bands that we like very much as Lidia Damunt (i don't know if she still lives in Madrid), Los Punsetes, Atomizador, Los Claveles, Charades, Grosgoroth and I've got a new band called Prisma en Llamas.
But do not know much about how it is all in Madrid
You seems to got a very stronge hardcore / punk background, what happened to make you think it would fit great with latin & tropical influences ?
No lo sé. La verdad es que empezamos hace muchos años metiéndonos en el tropicalismo brasileño. Nunca hemos querido ser un grupo tropicalista ya que esa época y ese espíritu fue único y no se puede repetir. Pero a nivel de sonido yo creo que un disco clave fue Discover America de Van Dyke Parks, con el que descubrimos el Calypso y supongo que nos marcó un poco.
I don't know. The truth is that many years ago we started getting into Brazilian tropicalia. We never wanted to be a tropical band because this era and spirit was unique and you can't repeat it. But talking about sound, I think the key record was Discover America by Van Dyke Parks, with which we discover Calypso, and I supposed that it touched us a bit.
What are you influenced by more generally (not only musically) ?
Musicalmente cada uno tiene sus gustos. Nos influye bastante nuestras vidas y las ganas de crear algo que mueva a la gente a hacer las cosas a su manera.
Musically, each one of us got his own taste. We are influenced by our life and the desire to create something that moves people to do things his way.
And the dumb question for the end, do you drink a lot of Margaritas ?
Comme vous le savez je suis aussi producteur, alors avant de les supprimer définitivement voici un panaché de morceaux jamais sortis, non signés ou un peu obsolètes que j'ai fait ces dernières années. Le but est d'éclaircir un peu l'information de mon soundcloud en ne gardant que le meilleur ou le récent. Prenez les maintenant ou jamais !
In order to clear the information on my soundcloud, here is a list of tracks that I'll delete in a few time (2 weeks or something), most of them are unsigned, old or unreleased, most of them are not bad at all, some would surely deserve a better life (thinking about Modern Lovers for example). But anyway, here they are. Take before they leave forever.
Neil Brogan is a busy man. Is not only involved into one of our favorite band at the moment Girls Names, he's also behind the uber-cool tape label Cass/Flick (have a watch on the big cartel, they got plenty good stuff including GN again or Captured Tracks' Cloud Nothings) and now is also making a project by himself called Sea Pinks. And trust us, the first cassette he just released through his label is just great. If you like Girls Names but want to listen it on the beach or just for chillin in the garden with your friends go listen to this now !
Can you introduce a bit Sea Pinks ?
Sea Pinks is a new project I am doing which kind of started when I got my 1966 fender mustang guitar about 6 months ago. I think the guitar pretty much wrote the songs actually.
Sea Pinks is not your first project for how long are involved into music ?
Yeah I've been involved in music since I was like 14, quite a long time ago now. I've been in various bands with other people and also on my own. Recently I've been doing kind of one-off projects and then moving on to the next thing. I'm not sure yet if Sea Pinks will be one of these or not.
What about Girls Names ? Cathal, Claire and you are going to release more stuff soon ?
Oh yeah those guys. We have a split single coming out later in the autumn with Brilliant Colors which is very exciting and then the album should be along in early 2011 on Slumberland in the US and Tough Love in the UK, also very exciting!
This is your first ever release as Sea Pinks, but you got already plenty of great tunes ? What could we wait for you and the next months ? any single / LP ?
Thanks! I'm pleased with the tape for what it is, so we'll see if any more things come out of it. If anyone wants to put it out on vinyl tho they are very welcome!
As Sea Pinks, what's your influences ? IMO their kind of similar to Girls Names but surely less dark ?
Yeah there is quite a lot of crossover and I think being in GNs has turned me on to a lot of cool things too. But yeah I'm probably more into the brighter garage side of things. The sea, the coast, the beach seems to take an important place in your music ?
Yeah I guess so, I grew up by the sea so maybe that's why. The place where my folks live has lots of nice sea pinks flowers too.
You were drummer in Girls Names, but now you're on the guitar, who are the other members ?
Just me right now, and claire is helping out a bit on drums for shows. I did the album all myself which is why the playing is pretty sketchy ha!
You are also owning a cassette label, Cass/Flick, why you decided once to release cassettes ? How can you explain the kind of come back of this format ?
Just because tapes are way cheaper and easier than vinyl and you can do them in super short runs which suits me very well right now. I guess the comeback is down to those kind of things and also the nostalgia people have for cool analogue stuff in general.
What music are into at the moment ? What is your favorite new band ?
I just listened to Architecture and Morality by OMD and it was pretty good so I'll say them, even tho they aren't really.
Je n'ai jamais été un spécialiste de Twee, genre auquel je me frotte un peu plus souvent ces derniers temps et notamment grâce à la découverte de ce morceau et de ce groupe. Jusqu'à maintenant, j'avais un peu l'image en tête d'un groupe d'étudiant mal dans leur peau, légèrement geek qui joue de la musique mignonne, pop et un peu sur-arrangé. Bon évidemment, le portrait que je dépains est un peu sévère d'autant qu'on connait bien des groupes qui ne rentre pas tant que ça dans ce cliché. Allo Darlin fait certes de la musique mignonne mais surtout sait surtout balancer des chansons sacrément bien foutues, qui crût qu'une fille avec un ukulélé pourrait faire autre chose que de la folk barbante pour pub de voiture, bon ok il y a Marylin Monroe dans Certains l'aime chaud ! Tout ça pour dire, The Polaroid Song défonce, parfait pour écouter l'été, c'est dansant, charmant et plein d'élégance. Cette petite (grande par la taille) Elizabeth a du talent.
I never been a specialist of Twee, i always got some big cliché about "indie pop" (i know we're speaking all the time about indie, but twee fans often called it indie pop because twee is often understand as a bad word...anyway), like i was imagining a bunch a non-self confident geek student playing at college pubs and special venues full of people that like cute pop. But, first i most admit i'm bad, then that Allo Darlin breaks all this cliché, ok she's cute, but besides that, she gots an amazing talent to make incredible song, the one you listen and sing all the time, and make you dance innocently like a joyful kid. The Polaroid Song is just like that and we love it !
Disparu de la circulation depuis 8 ans, Deejay Punk-Roc a, à la fin des années 90, début 2000 sorti deux excellents albums d'electro-funk breakbeat bien foutu. Son premier disque ChickenEye est toujours cool même 12 ans après. One More Bump est le single du second, Spoiling It For Everyone, et c'est une bombe funky, instantanée et groovy. Le reste de l'album n'est pas toujours à la hauteur de ce single. Mais voici une pepite oubliée de la musique électronique des années 2000 qui me fait toujours secouer de bassin vulgairement.
Lost for like 8 years, Deejay Punk-Roc was kind of important producer at the end of the 90s / early 2000s thanks to two very good album released on 1998 (Chicken Eye) and 2000 (Spoiling It For Everyone). I got a real preference for first album, the second is perhaps too superficial, but i most admit that this single is just a killer. One More Bump is funky as hell and makes you want to dance like if you got lust in your hips. Now, this guy has been totally forgotten, it's even quite difficult to find his songs on youtube, but wow, One More Bump was just big.
In Fine Style est typiquement le genre de disque qui trouva son public « longtemps » après sa sortie officielle. En 2001, Horsepower Productions équipe protéiforme montée sur les bases d'une petite bande de producteurs Drum'n Bass s'approprie les bases d'un UK Garage dub, minimal et cinématique hérité des pionniers Groove Chronicles (Stone Cold), El-B ou Steve Gurley. Il invente alors un terme qui fera ensuite le tour du monde : le Dubstep.
Ce disque qui fait alors figure d'ovni dans le microcosme UK Garage en pleine phase 2 step vocal et 4x4 bumpy, et juste avant l'avalanche Grime, trouve quand même un écho favorable, mais qui ne dépasse pas vraiment les frontières d'une micro-scène quasiment uniquement britannique. C'est seulement quelques années plus tard, et probablement le Midnight Request Line de Skream que le genre passe un autre niveau. La production s'est elle aussi formalisée, rythmique half tempo, wobble lorgnant parfois vers la DnB ralentie vulgaire mais aussi aujourd'hui des enfants du Garage adepte d'un Dubstep soulful et millésimé tel que Joy Orbison, Untold ou Mosca.
A titre personnel, je ne sais pas si c'est par nostalgie ou aigreur, mais je n'ai toujours pas trouvé mieux en dubstep que les deux sublimes albums de Horsepower, In Fine Style donc, sorti en 2001 et le tout aussi génial To The Rescue de 2004.
Il y a pas très longtemps, j'avais ramené ma copie de l'album du disque en soirée pour qu'un pote DJ me dise « oh putain, tu as In Fine Style, mais tu as du le payer une fortune ?! »... Apparemment aujourd'hui la version vinyle s'échange pour une fortune (j'ai ouïe dire que ça tournerait autour de 50 – 60 €). Vers 2003 – 2004, j'ai même trouvé le CD en soldes pour à peine 3€ à Virgin... Le dubstep n'a pas toujours eu l'unanimité qu'il a aujourd'hui dans la scène électronique internationale.
In Fine style is quite typically the record which will find his own public long time after his release. In 2001, Horsepower Productions is a multi-formal team born in a band of Drum'n Bass producers who catch the deep dub & cinematic vibe of some of the UK Garage pionneer like Groove Chronicles (Stone Cold), El-B or Steve Gurley. Soon, they will invent the word and the rules of a new genre of music : Dubstep.
This record is not an « usual » garage record at that time. This was the moment of vocal 2 step and bumpy 4x4 as well we were feeling the begin of Grime (thanks to Pay As You Go, Heartleass Crew or More Fire Crew). But the record find a public in the british garage scene, mostly with the darkest dj (J Da Flex, Darqwan, Zed Bias...) but nothing outside, or defenitly not as it is now ! Dubstep will become famous far later, i'd say with the release of Skream's all time classic Midnight Request Line (on the label set up by Horsepower guys !). Then the production is already more formalised with mainly half tempo beats and wobble bass whereas as you could hear in the two extracts, Horsepower were really free in their approach of the beats. They had a real breathe in it, which is still sound amazing nowadays ! I think only now we could find the real follower of HP including people like Joy Orbison, Untold or Mosca.
Personnaly, I dunno if it's because i'm nostalgic or a sour old DJ (almost 25... can you imagine !), but in my opinion, both Horsepower albums are Dubstep as its best level ever and no one reach them yet, even Burial or Skream. If i had to make a top 10 of the 2000s one of them will surely be in it. This records were just trully magic, and still are !
Des Liberty Valance je ne sais pas grand chose, à part que le groupe semble s'être séparé. C'est dommage car à l'écoute de ces deux morceaux, on aurait aimer en entendre plus! "Les 12 heures noires" démarre comme "apache" des Shadows avant d'embrayer sur quelque chose de très différent, et franchement plus cool, le texte est un peu maladroit par moment, mais la construction et les idées sont déjà excellentes. Bref on aimerait entendre plus souvent des groupes français faire ce genre de chose, énergique, sincère et bien composé, ils avaient tout bon, dommage que pas grand monde ne s'en soit rendu compte. "1" est un court instrumental, mais il est vraiment cool aussi.
Liberty Valance is a french band, they have splited but their music was really cool, and a lot better than most french bands (why are thinking english will make them star in England). "Les 12 heures noires" is fierce and very good, so listen to it.
Je n'avais plus fait de morceaux dubstep depuis des siècles ! Non pas que je n'aimais pas ça, ou plus ça, mais surtout car je ne me sentais pas mur techniquement pour m'y remettre vu le saut de production qu'il y a eu au tournant 2005-2006 et son explosion commerciale (merci Midnight Request Line de Skream). Depuis c'est devenu un des genres majeurs de la musique electronique qui s'est bien plus développé que son ancêtre le UK Garage en son temps... Pour quelles raisons, je ne sais pas, peut être que son langage est plus universel que celui du 2-Step... Enfin.
Je présente ici un petit panel de mes dernières productions qui ont une forte coloration dubstep, depuis que je me suis rendu compte que je savais encore en faire !

C'est toujours difficile pour moi de réécrire à propos d'un disque que j'ai chroniqué sur SoV, comme c'est le cas ici. Veronica Falls est donc un groupe écossais nés sur les cendres des géniaux Sexy Kids et des Royal We. Found Love In The Graveyard est typiquement le genre de morceaux que nous adorons chez RPUT, de la pop modeste mais bien emmené, une mélodie parfaite, une ambiance aux confluences de la Twee et du shoegaze vaguement gothique (un peu comme The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart) comme en témoigne le titre du morceau. Notez que le 45 tours est sorti sur l'excellent label Captured Tracks qui se fout de notre gueule sur les frais de ports sur son site internet... mais bon... une fois de temps en temps, quand c'est de ce niveau là on peut bien se faire plaisir non ?
Here is a new track for our scottish week that begin with the great Orange Juice few days ago. Veronica Falls is now based in London but with members from the scot bands Sexy Kids and The Royal We. The amazing tracked called We Found Love In The Graveyard is typically the song we like on RPUT. It's all about pop but made with a lot of heart, passion and with incredibly catchy melodies, it sounds like something between twee pop and goth shoegaze pop a bit like the successful The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart last year. The 7'' is quite hard to find as far as it was released by the excellent but expensive american label Captured Tracks. Anyway, this is a highly addictive songs and warmly recommended despite the price (if you are based in Europe)
Issu de l'excellent album Harlem Pripyat, Midnight Man Parts est un de mes morceaux préférés de Bipolar Bear dont j'ai découvert l'existence il y a peu, et me suis immédiatement procuré la quasi-intégralité des disques... groupie ? Ce morceau est juste une bombasse, une sauvagerie entêtante de moins de 2 min, du post-punk noisy froid, distant et violent. Bande son idéale pour un film d'anticipation, Orwell apprécierait j'en suis sûr. Allez mec (fille), bouge la tête et laisse toi bouffer par cette guitare étourdissante, cette basse belliqueuse et ce chant capiteux.
This song is an extract from the great album Harlem Pripyat. Midnight Man Parts is surely one of my favorite song this year, i can't stop listening it over and over and over. This a pure gem of hypnotic, cold and distant post-punk. It lasts just 2 minutes, but it's full of slow energy, violent feelings and insane atmosphere which could make this song as a perfect music for 20/12/2012. So come on mate, be prepared to that and listen that incredible song.
Bon ça y est depuis le mois de septembre je crois que j'écoute beaucoup plus de musique américaine, non pas que je sois totalement lassé des anglais mais juste que je trouve la période un peu sage à quelques exceptions près dont j'essaierai de parler avant la fin du mois. Mais ici, c'est des excellents Experimental Dental School dont je parlerais. Un duo guitare-batterie, un garçon une fille, évidemment tout le monde pense aux White Stripes non ? Blood Red Shoes à la limite, mais rien à voir avec les deux. Ici on joue plus dans une gatérie qui serait une sorte de pont entre Stereolab et Deerhoof -dont le groupe est proche- (ou comment allécher AlexTwist). Dans Cheap Wine River retrouve un cette pop barrée avec quelques harmonies vocales, le tout supporter par une rythmique binaire hoquetante. C'est plutôt original dans l'esprit et ce morceau est vraiment super bien foutu, assez catchy tout en étant vraiment absolument pas tubesque... Le reste de l'album que le groupe offre pour la modique somme de... rien du tout sur son site tend parfois vers un prog rock culbuté, de l'indie rock désarticulé, mais avec toujours un fond pop et des mélodies biens vues.
Be happy my friends, i'm now listening much more american music than never. Why, i dunno, surely because each day more i'm discovering some incredible obscur bands from all over the US. Here are Experimental Dental School. Girl & Boy, Guitar & Drums = White Stripes ? Blood Red Shoes ? NOT, There is nothing with this two bands here. It sounds a bit like a playful mix of Deerhoof (with whom they are friends) and Alextwist's fav Stereolab. Sounds like angular pop prog-rock or twisted indie funk pop or something like that. Anyway, this song is incredibly clever and catchy, definitly not an anthem, but definitly great. By the way the band is giving away their album for free download so GO CHECK IT NOW.
Sur leur premier album, les Smith Westerns sont un peu à la confluence de tout ce que nous aimons ici : Punk (comme ici avec ces riffs très Buzzcocks), Power-pop, indie et même parfois glam. Mais le tout est ici concassé dans le mortier lo-fi de guitares dissonantes, saturations à fond, avec cet esprit post-ado DIY si attirant. Il n'y a qu'à entendre cette voix éraillée de jeune filou qui abuse sur les cordes vocales et le whisky cul sec. Finalement, on est ici pas si loin des Black Lips, même sens aigu de la mélodie, même extraordinaire je m'en foutisme et même irrévérence, la pochette d'ailleurs est une belle attaque du Nevermind de Nirvana. Les Smith Westerns n'ont aucun respect, et c'est ça qui est bon.
On their first album, the Smith Westerns are totally into what we always loved : Punk (this song is quite Buzzcocks influenced), Power-pop, indie and even sometimes Glam (Girl In Love) with a lo-fi youth diy taste thanks to saturated noisy guitars and recording or this young whisky-washed voice. Somehow, is not far from what Black Lips done before, but far less sixties garage, but like them they 've got a great sense of making melodies, nonchalance and irreverence. By the way, look at this amazing attack to Nirvana with this cover. Smith Westerns are totally disrespectful, and this is definitly what we were expected !
De la musique instrumentale sur requiem pour un twister, il y en a assez peu souvent n'est ce pas. Je suis en train de devenir totalement groupie de ce groupe, je collectionne déjà disques, tshirt, je me suis évidemment déplacé à leur premier concert français, il y a peu à l'espace B... Cette musique est juste incroyable, une sorte de math-rock tendant vers le prog et le jazz mais débordant d'une énergie punk quasi-irrationnelle, la faute à une rythmique maousse qui tabasse sauvagement tout en gardant une musicalité à toute épreuve. Cette musique est volontairement ambitieuse, mais reste modeste, pas trop de chichi, juste des thèmes catchy et de l'énergie et encore de l'énergie, mieux que la taurine ! Notez que les trois musiciens ont pas mal tournés à Londres, avec d'autres groupes ! Deux d'entre eux ont notamment jouer avec Jeremy Warmsley ou Emmy The Great, où quand les session-men se font une petit récré jouissive !
I must admit that instrumental music is quite rare on RPUT, mainly when it's not electronic music... At the time, i'm a bit obsessed by Three Trapped Tigers. I already collecting records and tshirts... And for sure, i went to their first and only (yet) show in France recently. This music is just amazing, it sounds like math-rock blasting prog and jazz with a punk energy, thanks to a massive drummer who bang his set like i rarely heard. Note that two of the musicians feat on Jeremy Warmsley songs and one of them also feats Emmy the Great album. Three Trapped Tigers is bit like a let's have fun side project for session-men or something ? Anyway, this is quite beautiful, and you should really listen the rest !
BONUS : As a bonus, here is my last remix, i did for an indie band based in germany, it's very dancefloor and electro orientated. Hope you'll like it !
Comme vous l'aviez sans doute remarqué chez Requiem Pour Un Twister nous n'avons aucune frontière, la seule, la bonne musique ! Je nourris depuis ses débuts un amour inconsidéré pour le Grime, enfant insolant et arrogant du UK Garage (le dubstep étant son enfant intello ?). Le genre a été inventé par deux disques séminaux I Luv U de Dizzee Rascal dont j'ai déjà parlé il y a une éternité et Musical Mobb - Pulse X. Puis dans l'enchainement, nombres de producteurs et MCs issus des banlieues sombres de Londres (principalement, malgré des scènes provinciales très vivaces notamment à Manchester) tels que Wiley, Skepta, DaVinche, Danny Weed, Lethal Bizzle, Dexplicit... Tous plus ou moins membres de divers crew (héritage des So Solid Crew, Pay As You Go ou Heartless Crew...). Private Caller sorti en 2005 est quasi introuvable en vinyle, et pourtant quel tube, un concentré d'énergie, une instru cabossée et malmenné par des MCs rageux et violents. Ça c'est vraiment le grime qu'on aime, franc du collier, incisif et franchement addictif... La Fouine se la joue Ghetto, la blague, voici le son des radio pirates !
Our only frontier, good music ! As you may know, we haven't any rules or favorite style (even if you can surely see a deep love for pop culture). I have a real, truth and not so new love for Grime. I went into it because i was already a big garage lover (and DJ and producer by myself). Skepta is one of my fav grime producer ever, and this song is just his sickest to date. Forget about his mainstream recent trips, this one is all about dirty energy and violence ! Real grime as we love it !
Je trouve assez étonnant que ce disque soit passé totalement inaperçu. Qu'aucun buzz n'ait lieu autour de ce jeune songwriter de 23 ans... Le genre de mec qui te file la honte quand tu fais de la musique. Car c'est qu'il est sacrément talentueux ce garçon, il a intégré avec une rare pertinence l'héritage de la pop culture sixties au sens large, qu'elle chatouille les harmonies vocales des Beach Boys, le psychédélisme léger de Donovan, ou le groove millésimé de la Motown... Trading Things In n'est pas nécessairement la chanson la plus représentative de At Breakfast, Diner, Tea mais c'est petit tube, qui rappelle vaguement le riff imparable du Brimful Of Asha de Cornershop. Je conseille très fortement son album, que bien qu'un peu chargé est remplie de superbes chansons qui mériteraient vraiment une exposition supplémentaire, d'autant que je sais qu'ici il y a de nombreux fan de sixties pourquoi ne pas se plonger dans l'un de ses enfants légitimes ?
I'm quite surprising that The Voluntary Butler Scheme album called At Breakfast, Diner, Tea didn't get more buzz recently. First the guy is pretty young (23), it's one man band, the guy is enough talented to put shame on you when you try to make so music. This album is real good sum-up of the sixties pop culture, mixing togheter Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies, Donovan psych folk and Motown's groove... Trading Things In is surely not the more representative but i love so much this song, it's a bit like the classic Brimfull Of Asha by Cornershop. A Real good but modern vision of the sixties ! I know that there are a lot of sixties lover here, so try this out !
En fait, ça fait des mois que j'aurais pu parler de Stricken City et de cette chanson en particulier, sauf qu'il m'était totalement impossible d'en trouver une version correcte si ce n'est en vidéo. Or depuis que j'ai écouter leur premier single (Tak O Tak) et que je suis aller me ballader qui la mettait en écoute sur leur myspace, j'en suis tombé amoureux. Quelques semaines après, il l'enlève, même plus possible de leur piquer avec un obscur downloader... Mais heureusement, elle est le point central de leur nouvelle sortie, un mini-album plutôt réussi sorti chez nos amis de pure groove (pour changer) ! Mais bon écouter 5 metres apart et puis craquer pour Rebeka Raa qui en plus d'être canon a une voix assez exceptionnelle !
Actually, I could speak to you about this song for months, surely about one year. Cause my first met with this song was when the band released their single, i want on their myspace and find 5 metres apart which immediately caught my attention. The bassline is great, the rhythm makes me shake but above all, Rebeka Raa is incredibly charming. She's one of those typical british girl you love, cute, with half fragile half sure voice, she's got something arty without looking nose-high. She's tall and even if she's gorgeous she not seems to well in her tall body... By the way this song is so addictive...
Voici le genre de groupes qui n'a jamais vraiment réussi a confirmé le potentiel que nous voyions en eux, ni vraiment eu l'exposition qu'il méritait. Leur premier single était un split partagé avec les potes de Forward Russia, il faut dire que leur musique se ressemblait à bien des égards, agressive, puissante, crade, arrachée et vaguement schizophrénique, hésitant entre post-punk mélodique et post-hardcore entêtant... Wardens s'inscrit à fond la dedans, et c'est à mon avis de loin leur meilleur morceau, d'une rare intensité, violent, sale et saturé... Le groupe s'est séparé depuis, je ne sais pas trop ce qu'ils sont devenus, des anonymes sans doute... Le destin de Forward Russia est d'ailleurs à peu près équivalent, quelle tristesse.
This is tyically the kind of group who never really confirmed their potential or get the light they deserve. They released their first single in 2004 spliting with the famous Forward Russia. Their music is quite similar, hesitating between post-punk and post-hardcore. Wardens is typically in this position, in-between, but it's higly recommanded, this song is just so tense, violent, saturated. Wow. Since then, the band splited up in 2008 or 2007 without never been as good as they are on this song despite a quite good and hard to find album...
