Edwin Starr n'est pas le plus connu des artistes motown, pourtant il a fait de nombreux classiques dans les sixties et début des seventies, tels que SOS, agent double-o-soul et surtout War.Ce morceau écrit par Norman Whitfield et Barrett Strong (déjà évoqués ici pour les Undisputed Truth) est à l'origine destiné aux Temptations qui l'enregistrent sur leur album Psychedelic Shack. Le morceau anti-militariste rencontre de l'écho auprès des étudiants contre le Vietnam, il est donc réenregistré par Edwin Starr (avec toujours Norman Whitfield à la prod) et devient un énorme tube (#1 aux USA et #3 au RU).
War est un des premiers morceaux contestataire de la Motown, à une époque ou la soul prend conscience de son rôle "politique" avec des artistes comme Marvin Gaye ou Curtis Mayfield.

This last tune was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Temptations. They recorded it on Psychedelic Shack, but the definitive version, that became a huge hit both in UK (#4) and USA (#1) was by Edwin Starr. It was a kind of anthem for the anti-war movement and as other soul artists (Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye) it shows how soul became more concerned by politic and social commentary in the seventies.
